Online Process Gas Analyzer (OE/OP)

Online GC-MSD-SIM SYSTEM for monitoring ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO).

The analysis system is based on the GC/MSD technique in SIM mode for selective monitoring Ethylene Oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO). The specific ions of each compound monitored in SIM mode are:

m/z = 44 for ethylene oxide (EO)

m/z = 58 for Propylene Oxide (PO)

The GC system is equipped with AGILENT QUICKSWAP® technology that allows performing special functions required for this application. The obtained results are processed, converted and transmitted to the control system automatically, using the corresponding software and hardware elements integrated to the monitoring system.

In order to increase the reproducibility of sampling, additionally the sample conditioning system, it has a built-pressurization system sample line which is set at 3.6 psi (0.25 bar).

The analytical system has two operating states in automatic mode:

1. Online: when they are monitoring the actual emission gases.

2. In verification: during which is verified the state, machine settings, and analytical answers.

The system is configured to perform an infinite loop on a predetermined sequence analysis, which contains 100 online analysis for each verification stage. The analysis cycle comprises the following steps:

1. Conditioning injection loop: approx. 30 sec.

2. Initial stage of analysis (SOLVENT DELAY): approx. 60 sec.

3. Phase analysis OE: approx. 48 sec.

4. Stage analysis OP: approx. 120 sec.

5. Stage backwash column: approx. 132 sec.

6. Processing and data transmission: approx. 30 sec

Additionally, the process of switching from the online status to precise verification needs approximately 30 sec; while the reverse process requires only approx. 5sec. The fault signal is transmitted if elapses more than 20 minutes without new data received from the GC/MSD. This limit can be reconfigured from the CHROMGATE program. The results are converted to 4-20 mA signals, which are re-interpreted by the plant control system. The correspondences of the minimum and maximum of each electrical signal are configured by the ChemStation program and by the control system of the plant. The conversion of analytical results is carried out linearly between the minimum and maximum range.

Range limit values are different for the online mode and for the verification mode:

On line:

OE: 4 mA = 0 mg/m3 and 20 mA = 10 mg/m3

OP: 4 mA = 0 mg/m3 and 20 mA = 10 mg/m3

In verification:

OE: 4 mA = 20000 accounts and 20 mA = 120000 accounts

OP: 4 mA = 10000 accounts and accounts 20 mA = 80000

(NOTE: These values are approximate and may vary according to the particular circumstances of the equipment).

Signal out of range is transmitted when the resulting value of analysis exceeds the predefined limits in the quantification method. When signal out of range occurs during verification, the equipment is considered out of specification, so that means that the system does not operate under the quality parameters required for the application and it will be need maintenance and recalibration.
